IELTS, TOEFL, etc. are intended for university admittance and for adult learners. CMGE levels and provincial standards are intended to be age appropriate, for elementary and secondary students.

ELL Levels and Secondary School Courses

Each CM Global English ELL level has a suggested number of ESL classes and recommended regular courses. Most high school students in Canada and the USA, regardless of ELL ability, generally take a maximum of eight courses per school year, or four courses per semester

LEVELS ABILITIES SUGGESTED COURSES
Level 1 little or no English three ESL courses, Mathematics and four electives
Level 2 low intermediate English three ESL courses, Mathematics, Sciences and electives
Level 3 upper intermediate English two ESL courses, Mathematics, Sciences, Socials Studies, and electives
Level 4 advanced English one ESL course, Mathematics, Sciences, Social Studies, Language Arts (English), and electives
Level 5 approaching fluency no ESL courses, Mathematics, Sciences, Social Studies, Language Arts (English), and electives

Post-Secondary Possibilities

LEVELS ABILITIES
Levels 1 – 3 Would not have the English proficiency to be able to successfully attend North American colleges and universities
Level 4 Should be able to manage most non-Humanities courses in North American colleges and universities
Level 5 Should be able to manage most courses in North American colleges and universities
